Every human being
has a right to live life
to his or her fullest potential.

Desperation and fear
are Mankind's oldest enemies.
A society may fairly be judged
by the extent to which it spares
its most vulnerable citizens
from having to endure them.

Self-sufficiency is less satisfying
to the soul than caring
for one another.

As Mankind truly is one family,
what benefits any one of us
enhances the lives of us all.
Those of us with greater needs
enable their loved ones
by enabling them to feel needed.

Make it possible for people
(both the less and more fortunate)
to achieve peace of mind.

To love another
means you can't feel things
are okay until you know
they feel that way.
Your peace of mind
depends on knowing you've helped
bring peace of mind to the other.

Live and help live
Provide a person
with the means to live
a fuller life and you give more
meaning to yours.

Help those with special needs
attain greater independence
and security.

If only the strong were to survive,
wouldn't all of our lives
be greatly diminished?

Prepare. Protected. Provide.
The families who count on us
expect nothing less.

Socially Responsive Architecture
Speaker: Ramesh Gulatee, Architect
Sponsored by: 21st Rehabilitation International World Congress
Hospitalite' Quebec
Quebec City, Quebec, NY
For more information, click here.
Description: Architecture has been the purview of those able to afford it. This fact alone sets it apart as an art form that is to be appreciated but not enjoyed. Serious and valiant efforts are made at many levels in society to broaden it's accessibility to the masses through various mechanisms. If we were to delve further we shall find that we, as a design community, are guilty of advocating design solutions that are the domain of the richest and the fittest amongst us. The built environment is much of a social issue and that architecture has the capability to generate movements to address social causes. That form follows finance and our designs reflect that elitism by defying the basic tenet of good design, i.e., equitable accessibility, sustainability and enjoyment. We conveniently disregard that design of the built environment should be for the enjoyment of all, regardless of age, gender or abilities. Focusing the design thought process and attention on Affordability, Adaptiveness, Accessibility and Sustainability can lead to broad spectrum participation and acceptance. LifeCare Design Studio is using these concepts on a multiuse special needs community project that is groundbreaking in its scope. The Board of Trustees of the "Gateway to Learning" School have followed dreams about their special needs students that in-fact became the programming parameters for providing a complete live/work/play environment. Ramesh Gulatee will discuss the project details, it's challenges and triumphs, and how Socially Responsive Architecture has made dreams come true.
